"Changing the Washington Guard: What a Democratic Sweep in November Portends" by Roger D. Harris

September 18th, 2020 At the risk of counting chickens before they hatch, what would the return of Team Blue portend? As is patently obvious, the US is in trouble. Climate driven heat waves and fires grip the nation. An already faltering economy with deep contradictions could only tank given the shock of the pandemic that has necessitated varying degrees of sequestering. In fact, the  downturn  had already started before COVID-19 hit. An already largely privatized healthcare system run for profit and a social ethic that rejects “socialized” public health measures could only have proven inadequate. Added to this mix, an  historically racist  nation was ripe for the righteous protests against overt injustices. These conditions pre-dated Trump’s presidency and predetermined the current calamity. The designated chump is Trump Trump is screwing up royally, but the root causes were unavoidable. Rather than owning up to the inherent nature of capitalism, which puts profits before people as i

BLUEPRINT FOR OVERTHROW: TRANSITION INTEGRITY PROJECT

Image
BLUEPRINT FOR OVERTHROW: TRANSITION INTEGRITY PROJECT Let’s take a moment to think about something called the Transition Integrity Project.  Just by its name you’ll be impressed by a seemingly highly moral commitment to honesty during the election.  But wait: what about that word ‘Transition’?  Doesn’t it presuppose a change in the presidency?  Yes, it does.  And it’s a ‘Project.’  What could that mean?  A project of what? Nicolas Berggruen , a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the World Economic Forum, is a billionaire who has spent at least 10 years and millions of dollars in ‘reinventing and restructuring democracy.’  What could that mean?  Through his  Berggruen Institute  this financier/stock market savant has suavely assembled groups of ‘influencers’ to do just that:  to write books, form spin-off groups, and endow positions in business and universities. Nicolas Berggruen is the force behind the Transition Integrity Project.  I first became aware of Berggruen in 20

What are They Hiding? Human Rights Groups Blocked from Monitoring Julian Assange Trial

What are They Hiding? Human Rights Groups Blocked from Monitoring Julian Assange Trial (MPN)  T he high profile extradition hearing of publisher and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange continued in Central London today. But it did so without oversight from international human rights groups. Julia Hall, an expert on criminal justice and human rights for Amnesty International,  revealed  that her organization was again denied entry to the court today, despite their repeated requests to be recognized as fair trial monitors. Fair trial monitors are a critical component to upholding transparency and regulation in courtrooms across the world, reminding authorities that independent witnesses are scrutinizing them. Hall noted that Amnesty monitors have been recognized as international fair trial monitors for cases in many repressive states, including Bahrain and Turkey, and even oversaw cases at Guantanamo Bay. “It is a disgrace that the UK has failed to recognize that international fair trial

Three Interactive Tools for Understanding Police Surveillance

Image
Three Interactive Tools for Understanding Police Surveillance This post was written by Summer 2020 Intern  Jessica Romo , a student at the Reynolds School of Journalism at University of Nevada, Reno.  As law enforcement and government surveillance technology continues to become more and more advanced, it has also become harder for everyday people to avoid. Law enforcement agencies all over the United States are using body-worn cameras, automated license plate readers, drones, and much more—all of which threat people's right to privacy. But it's often difficult for people to even become aware of what technology is being used where they live.  The Electronic Frontier Foundation has three interactive tools that help you learn about the new technologies being deployed around the United States and how they impact you: the Atlas of Surveillance, Spot the Surveillance, and Who Has Your Face? The Atlas of Surveillance https://atlasofsurveillance.org   The Atlas of Surveillance is a d

Louisville Antifa: Inside Two Of The City’s Most Militant Activist Groups

The post  on Facebook said that the Honorable Sacred Knights of the Ku Klux Klan would be meeting at Jaycee Park in Madison, Indiana on Aug. 31 for a “kookout” from 1 to 3 p.m., the group’s second gathering along the small town’s riverfront in two years. “Come support,” read the announcement, which included a phone number and email address, inviting the public to contact the HSK to become a member. Sure enough, on the day of the event, about 18 people milled about in the wooden shelter house on the slice of city-owned green space, most wearing dark colors, a few with bandannas obscuring their faces. A local counter-protester walked up to them, holding a “Racism is Ignorant” sign and jeering. But, the 18 people were not with the KKK. They belonged to the antifa movement, antifa being short for anti-fascism. Once the counterprotester realized her mistake, she tentatively joined the anti-fascists, sitting down with her sign in her lap, waiting with them to see if the KKK would show up.
